1938 (2) Eunice on a ship from LA to San Franscisco

After taking the bus from Chicago to Memphis, meeting Daddy there; Mummy took the train to Los Angeles with a friend, Jean, boarded a ship there and went 24 hours to San Francisco on her way to India by herself.

Mummy had had a vision when she was at Moody, "John, Jews, India".  John did not propose, so Mummy, a small town, farm girl from Wisconsin followed her Lord to India to work with the Jews...
( you can understand why meeting up with John  (C.J.B./ Cecil John Buffam/Daddy)  or receiving a wire from him was so important to her before she left the USA!

Dear Folks,

We just pulled in through the Golden Gate; docked about 11 am.   I’m going ashore and want to mail this out right away.
Yesterday and today have been full of new and thrilling experiences and you can be sure I’m enjoying every minute.  Just can’t tell you how grand it is.  My only regret is that I can’t take you all along.

How I missed you yesterday when the Boat pulled out of L.A.   Everybody throwing streamers out to friends and loved ones, but I’m afraid my streamers didn’t reach you.   I threw some to you just the same and my heart was more in Wisconsin than it was there.   It is a beautiful sight – Band playing and all!

Am writing a long letter of details later so will just make this a note so I can get it right out.

How are you all.  Did you get my message via Ruby?  Am hoping to hear from you here.  Will be here till Fri so you can get letters to me.  Had a wire from Mildred just as we got on the Boat in L.A. and one from C.J.B. just as the boat docked in S.F. this A.M. Precious Messages

We are trusting the Lord will supply full fare before we leave here.  I believe He will.  Dr. Reid wired us not to sail unless full fare is in.  God is able!  Sat, $15.00 came in and we got $36.00 at the boat yesterday.   We now have $69.00 of the $200.00 needed from Hong Kong on.   Pray and claim God’s promises!

I’m feeling fine but Jean had a bad fall Sat. eve and sprained her ankle.  Dr. put it in a cast Sun A.M. and they took her on board in a wheel chair.   Has to be on for two weeks.  She won’t be able to get around here much.  I felt so sorry for her when all her friends were at the Dock yesterday to see her off.  She couldn’t even go out on deck to see them and I could go out but my folks were far away.  It just didn’t seem right. But we are rejoicing in spite of these little things.

How is my Baby dear? (Roger Mortimer)  Give him plenty of kisses from Aunty Eunice and tell him all about the Big Ship.   I can just see what a big thrill Per would get out of this, the rest of you would too.

Jean sends her love, more details very soon.
Love you all,
Eunice

This is a poem that was very dear to Mummy through the years.  George Wilson found it on her dresser and made a copy.

OBEDIENCE

I said, "Let me walk in the fields,"  He said, "No walk in the town."
I said, "There are no flowers there."  He said, "No flowers, but a crown."

I said, "But the skies are black, there is nothing but noise and din."
And He wept as He sent me back, "There is more" He said, "There is sin."

I said, "But the air is thick, and fogs are veiling the sun."
He answered, "Yet souls are sick, and souls in the dark undone."

I said, "I shall miss the light, and friends will miss me, they say."
He answered, "Choose tonight, If I am to miss you or they."

I pleaded for time to be given.  He said, "Is it hard to decide?"
It will not seem hard in heaven to have followed the steps of your Guide."

I cast one look at the fields, then set my face to the town;
He said, "My child, do you yield?  Will you leave the flowers for the crown?

Then into His hand went mine, and into my heart came He;
And I walk in a light divine the path I had feared to see.
